Jo Phee Biography
Jo Phee is the creator of AcuYin, MyoYin, Meridian Nidra and the world’s first 1000-hour Diploma in Yin Yoga.
Known as a teacher’s teacher, Jo is a senior Yin Yoga & Anatomy Trainer well-known in the international yin yoga community for her specialties in Chinese Medicine, Bone Morphology, Functional Anatomy and Fascia Science. The first to introduce cupping, guasha, acupressure and myofascial release into yin yoga teacher training programs worldwide, Jo is also the pioneer yin yoga teacher to create “Upper Body Yin Yoga” to the mass public in 2006.
Widely dubbed as the “Queen of Props & Sequencing”, Jo has created hundreds of yin yoga variations and sequences in the past two decades through the ingenious use of props. These variations are showcased in her Book of Yin and have since been widely practised by the worldwide yin community.
Starting her yoga journey since 2000, Jo is the first-generation yin yoga teachers trained by Yin Yoga creators Paul and Suzee Grilley. Serving as their Senior Lead Assistant since 2009, she has spent thousands of hours in apprenticeship with them over the past two decades. She was personally mentored by them to teach their entire yin yoga and anatomy training curriculum. Jo has taught more than 20,000 public yoga classes since 2003 and conducted over 100 yin yoga teacher trainings worldwide. She teaches in 20 countries all over Asia Pacific, Middle East, Europe and USA. Thousands of yin teachers and trainers around the world have graduated from her Yinspiration teacher training programs.
Brought up solely with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from childhood by her Chinese Taoist parents, all of Jo’s initial induction into TCM was based on experiential knowledge passed down from generations in her Chinese family. She learnt Guasha and Cupping treatments from her grandparents and Chinese herbal medicine from her mother. To add theoretical knowledge to her practical experience, Jo went on to study at the Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Jo is a certified TCM Tuina Massage Therapist.
Jo holds a 3-year Diploma in Yoga (3000+hrs) from the Satyananda Yoga Academy. She has taken rigorous examination in the ashram to teach the original Yoga Nidra practice developed by Swami Satyananda of the Bihar School of Yoga. Her formal education in this practice coupled with her vast knowledge of the Chinese Meridian system inspired her to develop a new systematic practice - Meridian Nidra.
In 2012, in cooperation with the Vice Principal of the Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jo developed the world’s first comprehensive Chinese Medicine module to be taught in a yin yoga teacher training program. This module is closely modelled after the curriculum taught to Chinese Medicine Doctors in TCM universities in China. Since, this module has been the “gold standard” for many Chinese Medicine yin trainings around the world. In 2025, Jo will lead the much-anticipated TCM collaboration with Shanghai University of TCM for all Yinspiration graduates.
Driven by a profound interest in functional anatomy and fascia science, Jo has attended cadaver dissection labs in the United States and Europe since 2013. She has 1200 hours of dissection lab experience and has studied up to 100 cadaver specimens to-date. She has performed cadaver dissections at Stanford University, University of Padova Italy, McGill University Canada, Rutgers University Newark, University of Dundee Scotland, Marquette University Wisconsin and the Institute of Anatomical Research Colorado.
Jo has completed Fascia Research Summer School at Ulm University Germany and Leipzig University Institute of Anatomy. She is a founding member of the Fascia Research Society and a team member of the Fascial Net Plastination Project. From 2018 - 2022, she was involved with the team to create the world’s first 3D Plastinated Human Fascial Exhibits at the world-famous Body Worlds Plastinarium in Guben, Germany. Jo was the Chair Host for the Biotensegrity Symposium Canada 2019, and a presenter at the Pink Fascia Conference 2021. Jo continues to work regularly with the fascia research community to stage trainings for Yinspiration graduates, as well as leading her own cadaver dissection lab.
Jo holds certification in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) foundational training from Brown University and also from the Polyvagal Institute with Dr Stephen Porges. She is currently working on her “Book of Yin”, a publication that showcases hundreds of yin yoga variations, a reflection of her 20 years of teaching yoga.
